Why do we own CSL

Formerly Commonwealth Serum Laboratories before its privatisation by the Federal Government in 1994, biotechnology giant CSL is one of Australia’s most successful companies. CSL is a global leader in biotherapies, offering a broad range of blood plasma therapies essential for treating patients with immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases, bleeding disorders, cardiac surgery patients and shock and burn victims. Recognising the critical need for plasma, CSL has adopted a vertically integrated approach, owning over 30% of blood collection centres worldwide.

Additionally, CSL is the world’s second-largest influenza vaccine manufacturer and produces a wide range of other vaccines and anti-venoms. The recent acquisition of Vifor expands its reach into the growing kidney disease treatment market.

CSL thrives in expanding markets due to its scale efficiency, high return on capital, strong balance sheet, and robust R&D pipeline. Investing over $1 billion annually in R&D, CSL has a strong record of successful product launches. Post-COVID expansion in plasma capacity and its global presence should drive organic growth and improve profit margins, particularly in its Vifor kidney disease business.

ASX-listed CSL Limited is a key direct holding of the Evidentia Quality Core Portfolio, which is held in the Partners Medium Term, Long Term, and Multi-Asset Income Portfolios.
